Prepare Your HVAC System Before Leaving For Holiday Vacations

It's finally that time of year where you're ready to take off for your holiday vacation. While you're likely thinking about packing, you also need to be thinking about your home. There are some tasks you'll need to complete to prepare your HVAC system before your vacation.

Check Your HVAC System

Before you head off for your holiday vacationing fun, you should check over your HVAC unit. Replace the air filter and look for any signs of a problem. These include odd noises, water leaks, and even unusual smells. If you notice an issue with your HVAC system, it's best to call in an HVAC professional to get it evaluated.

When it's time for you to leave for vacation, you want to turn down your thermostat to around 50 to 60 degrees. This will ensure that you reduce the energy consumption of your HVAC system. This can also ensure that the pipes throughout your home don't freeze.

Unplug Your Appliances

Since you're not going to be at home to look over the appliances that you have plugged in, it's best to unplug them. Walk through each room of your home and unplug any appliances that aren't needed. These include appliances like alarm clocks, televisions, can openers, and so forth.

Vacuum Your Home

The last thing that you likely want to do before leaving for holiday vacation is vacuum your home. By vacuuming, you can reduce the amount of dust and debris that settles inside of your home while you're away. This is great for enhancing your indoor air quality so that it's not poor when you return from your vacation.

Prepare For Adverse Weather

No one likes thinking about adverse weather conditions. You need to keep that in mind so that you can protect your home in the event that bad weather hits while you're away. Assess your outdoor environment. Remove any unsecured structures or secure them to the ground.

Trim back any low-hanging branches that could damage your home if they happen to fall. Trim back any shrubs and remove loose debris, like leaves, from around your HVAC unit. These can restrict the airflow going in and out of the unit.

Assign Eyes to Your House

You can always prepare your home for your vacancy, there may be things you forget. Unexpected circumstances may occur in your absence. For this reason, it's recommended to assign someone to look after your home.

A close family member, friend, or co-worker can be that ideal someone. Have them swing by your home at least once a week. They should ensure that everything remains in good condition and nothing has happened.
