HVAC Basics for Beginners

Your HVAC system is a vital part of keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. Many different parts make up this system, and it can be confusing to understand it all. We're here to help! Here are some basics that everyone that has an HVAC system needs to know.

Furnace And Heat Exchanger

You can find this part in the basement. It warms the air in your house. Some people refer to it as a boiler, but it is a different appliance. You can find the heat exchanger inside the furnace. It adds heat to the air that comes into the combustion chamber.

Evaporator Coil

You can find this part inside of the furnace as well. Refrigerant runs through it and absorbs heat. This allows cold air to blow through your home's air ducts.

Condensing Unit

This component has a similar job to that of an evaporator coil. You can find the condensing unit outside in your HVAC unit. It does cool air, but it gives off heat as well.

Thermostat

The thermostat is the component of your HVAC system that you've seen the most. It's located on a wall in your home, and you use it to adjust your home's temperature. Many people want a programmable thermostat. This way, they can adjust their home temperature depending on what time of day it is. Many thermostats do have batteries that you will need to change at some point.

Ductwork And Vents

Air moves through your home via the ductwork and it's located in the attic or basement. It allows cold or hot air to go into each of the rooms and out of the vents. You will find vents located on the floor or ceiling in various rooms of your home. When your HVAC unit is running, hot or cold air comes out of them, depending on the thermostat temperature.

Air Filter

You may have heard to replace the air filter for your HVAC system monthly. Do you know where it's located? You can usually find this filter in the return air duct. It will collect dust and debris from the air its come in contact with.
