Change the Filters

Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat allows you to set your desired temperature for when you are home, away, or asleep. It will adjust the temperature automatically. Setting your thermostat helps you save money on cooling while remaining comfortable inside.

Clear the Condensation Line

During the cooling cycle, your air conditioner emits condensation. This condensation gathers in a pan beneath your inside unit. There's a pipe that diverts this condensation outside the house. If this pipe gets clogged, the condensation will pool up and could spill over. Before turning the A/C on for the first time this season, make sure the line is clear of clogs.

Clean the Outside Unit

Over the cool season, falling leaves and other debris can gather around your outside unit. Clear all the debris away. If there's vegetation growing up around it, cut it back. Clean the fine metal fins on your outside unit with a soft brush. Don't bend the fins.

Check Concrete Slab

The outside unit sits atop a concrete slab to help keep it stable. Use a level to make sure it’s plumb. If it isn't leveled, the coolant won’t flow properly through the coils. That means the unit has to work harder to keep your home cool. You can use a board to lever the slab up, then add gravel at the low spots. Keep doing this until the unit is level. Then, remove the board.

Check for Ductwork Leaks

Your home's ductwork may be older than the air conditioning unit itself. If it was installed over 10 years ago, the ductwork probably has a few leaks. These openings allow cool air to escape into your attic or basement. Check the ductwork for leaks and use A/C tape to close them up.

Set an Appointment for Maintenance and Tune-Up
