5 Household Products That Are Polluting Your Air

When you think of poor air quality, you think of outside air and not the air in your home. Unfortunately, pollutants can affect the inside of your home as much as they can the outside. There have been several studies completed by the Environmental Protection Agency. These found that indoor levels of pollution can be five times higher than outdoor levels. The cause of the pollution is some of the common things that you might use on a daily basis in your home.

1. Cleaning Products

Cleaning products can be very harmful and are a common pollutant that you will use in your home. While they may smell good, they release airborne particles that are harmful for the air in your home. When your HVAC system is running, it helps to spread those particles all-around your home. Instead of using harsh chemical cleaners, consider making your own cleaners. You can create these by using a combination of baking soda, water, and vinegar.

2. Paint

Paint cans that you have sitting around in your home can release VOCs in your home. This can cause issues with breathing. You can opt for paints that have a low level of VOCs. Store the paint in an outside shed instead of your home or attached garage.

3. Aerosol Sprays

Aerosol sprays like hairsprays, deodorant, and other sprays can cause poor air quality. These can be very toxic for your breathing and can spread throughout your home via the HVAC system. You should opt for all-natural alternatives.

4. Air Fresheners

One bottle of air freshener can contain many different chemicals. These chemicals are all well known, common pollutants. These can affect your breathing, cause allergic reactions, and lead to asthma attacks. While they smell good, they are very harmful for you. They can also get trapped on your HVAC system filter and cause it not to work as well as it should. Your HVAC filter can help to protect your home from these common pollutants.

5. Candles

Candles are great to light, and they smell amazing, but they are a common pollutant. But, if you use candles made with paraffin wax, they can release high levels of formaldehyde. This can lead to many different health ailments. You do not have to give up candles altogether. Find candles that use soy or beeswax.
